“The project of being human is messy, but it doesn’t have to be lonely. I’m not here to help you perform wellness — I’m here to help you actually find it.”
When you are smart, capable, and used to figuring things out on your own, it can be very frustrating to feel like you don’t understand a problem, or that you understand it but still find yourself stuck in the same emotional or relational cycles.
Dr. Fernandez works well with people who have already tried to think their way out of a problem, only to realize it’s not enough. She has a knack for “cutting through” to the heart of a matter for a different kind of conversation: direct, thoughtful, and emotionally engaged. It’s a breath of fresh air.
Before becoming a psychologist, Dr. Fernandez trained as a lawyer. She brings with her an uncommon ability to read people carefully and to communicate directly about what she sees. At the same time, she brings to the therapy space an intuitive understanding of the messiness inherent in being human. Her style is honest, nonjudgmental, playful, and collaborative.
Dr. Fernandez received her Psy.D. from the University of Denver, where she specialized in couples therapy. She also holds degrees from Dartmouth College and the University of Texas School of Law. Having lived and trained across different communities and cultures, from New England to Texas to the Rocky Mountains, she works well with people from a wide range of backgrounds and walks of life.
Dr. Fernandez fundamentally believes that people have to be understood in context, because we bidirectionally affect and are affected by the communities and environments we are embedded in. For that reason, she understands the importance of trying to welcome all of our identities into the therapy space. As a person with a larger body, Dr. Fernandez takes a destigmatizing, Health at Every Size (HAES)-informed approach that emphasizes holistic wellbeing, prioritizes peace, and values joy. As a native Spanish speaker, Dr. Fernandez also offers the option of conducting therapy bilingually in English and Spanish. Finally, she has specific training and experience working with LGBTQIA+ folks, older adults, immigrants, and people with schizophrenia-spectrum diagnoses who are medically stabilized.
Coming to therapy always involves holding fear alongside a dream of something better. I take both seriously.
If there’s one thing that Dr. Fernandez’s time in the legal world taught her about humanity, it’s that there’s always a reason for our behavior. If her time in the field of psychology taught her one other thing, it’s that oftentimes, hard problems can’t be fixed by thinking harder about them. In her work with individual clients, Dr. Fernandez uses her training in Psychodynamic therapy, Internal Family Systems, and attachment theory to walk steadily with clients towards greater self-understanding and more vibrant living, despite the discouraging effects of anxiety, depression, or repetitious patterns.
You bring the map and the compass. I know the terrain. Together we can help you put one foot in front of the other.
Relationships are living, breathing entities: they require nourishment, they suffer, and they are delicate and resilient in equal measure.
Dr. Fernandez understands that coming to couples therapy is an act in service of a wish for a brighter future. To get there requires inviting a witness into the darkness of the past and present. It is a vulnerable place to sit, and the accompanying fear is real. In her couples work, she protects the histories that each partner brings (both together and apart), and holds a space in time where each can feel seen and heard so that fear and vulnerability can make way for strength and safety.
Her couples work draws from the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples, Internal Family Systems, and Object Relations Couples Therapy. She works with couples at many stages of relationship, including those considering a larger commitment, couples in the early years of partnership, and long-partnered couples wanting to find their way back to each other.
She also works with couples across a range of relationship structures and identities, including heterosexual and queer couples, monogamous and non-monogamous partnerships, and polyamorous relationships.
Dr. Fernandez has completed her doctoral and post-doctoral training and is currently undergoing the final, administrative steps for full licensure. She will be joining the practice full-time in October and will work under Dr. Harter’s supervision until she becomes independently licensed.
