Laura Winters Unsworth, LMFT

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

Laura Winters Unsworth, LMFT (she/her)

Licensed in Massachusetts, Vermont & Florida

“I love helping adults shift narratives rooted in trauma and shame to ones of resilience and self-compassion. Trauma and anxiety often strip us of trust in ourselves; I work closely with clients to help them rebuild that trust and security.”

Feeling disconnected from yourself, overwhelmed by the demands of modern life, or facing tension in intimate relationships can leave you feeling isolated, anxious, and fragmented. These challenges, often tied to past wounds, make it hard to reconcile self-acceptance with the complexities of relationships and daily living.

Laura Unsworth (she/her), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), helps adults and couples navigate these difficulties by combining evidence-based therapies such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Taking a trauma-informed, human-centered approach, she uses attachment theory and focuses on body-mind integration and relationship dynamics to create a space for clients to reconnect with themselves and each other.

Couples Therapy

In her couples work, Laura uses EFT to help partners rebuild trust, improve communication, and strengthen emotional intimacy. By addressing attachment needs, EFT guides couples through conflicts and toward deeper understanding. Laura also specializes in helping couples navigate intimacy and sexual connection challenges, providing a safe space to rebuild physical and emotional bonds. Her approach supports couples through various relationship transitions, including postpartum adjustment and strengthening blended family dynamics.

Perinatal and Family Transitions

Laura specializes in supporting clients through perinatal transitions, offering guidance for those experiencing Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs). She also brings specialized EMDR training to work involving pregnancy, birth, postpartum adjustment, and perinatal trauma, helping clients process difficult experiences that may continue to affect how they feel in their bodies, relationships, or transition into parenthood. Her work extends to supporting parents in blended and divorced families, helping them navigate co-parenting challenges and family transitions. For solo parents, she provides a compassionate space to address emotional and logistical challenges, building confidence and emotional resilience.

Trauma and Emotional Resilience

Laura supports clients healing from trauma and has extensive experience working with adolescents and adults dealing with eating disorders, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Through EMDR and DBT, she helps clients process trauma and develop emotional regulation skills. Her approach particularly supports individuals navigating relational challenges, fostering self-trust and emotional safety.

What sets Laura apart is her holistic understanding of emotional, physical, and relational challenges, grounded in her diverse academic background. She holds a Master of Arts in Couples and Family Therapy from Seattle University, where she was recognized for community service and social justice work. Her foundation in Religious Studies from the College of William and Mary and graduate studies at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, enriches her therapeutic approach.

In this screen-centered age where stress and virtual connections often disconnect us from our embodied experience, Laura creates an environment for presence and reconnection. Her commitment to each client fosters a space where relationships strengthen and clients can experience renewed confidence and clarity.

How Laura works

  • Laura is a systems thinker, paying attention to a person’s inner experience, body, close relationships, family history, and the larger context around them
  • Brings a calm, steady presence to difficult topics, helping clients approach things they may have avoided or found too overwhelming to face without skilled support
  • Helps clients connect present reactions to earlier experiences and relationship patterns, then work toward different ways of responding
  • Moves between practical skills and emotional processing depending on what is most useful
  • Uses the body as an important source of information, helping clients notice activation and rebuild trust in themselves

What Laura loves about the work

“I see how one person’s healing ripples outward to their family members, key relationships, and even across generations. Helping clients to heal in their relational contexts is one aspect I love most about being a therapist.”
